This is a film based on a true life story of a baseball legend. It focuses on the life of Billy Beane, a general manager of a baseball team who is experiencing financial problems. He is therefore forced by circumstances to take another look at the conventional wisdom that has been used in the baseball circles for ages. He decides that what has been applied for over a hundred years is wrong, and he thus takes a new approach which if it works, is destined to change the whole game. It follows his struggles as he tries to convince people around him and many skeptics of his unconventional methods to the high point of whether his tactics will prove successful on the field.
Brad Pitt gives a compelling and believable performance as Billy Beane as he struggles to do better than other financially better placed clubs. He does this by recruiting players that have been variously written off by scouts through the use of a flawed performance system. What the movie depicts is something larger than baseball. It is the story of a man who choose to challenge age old traditions, the struggles and oppositions that he faces and eventually the big question: will it work?
This is a story well told and with the great performances from the cast, it is worth the time and money. It has been variously described as a movie that confronts the very soul of a tough game. Watching it, one gets to be drawn emotionally into the story while being able to enjoy some laughs through it.
Other than Brad Pitt, the movie features talented actors such as Jonah Hill who convincingly plays the role of Peter Brand, robin Wright, Stephen Bishop and Philip Hoffman. On overall, the movie is a worthy watch for people who love a good inspiring story.
