The Hunger Games is the new movie that everyone is talking about. The movie is set in the future. It is about Panem, a nation in whose capital the ‘Hunger Games’ are set. They are just not ordinary games, but rather a matter of life and death where teenagers are supposed to fight to the death.
In the capital, teenagers between the ages of twelve and eighteen are selected from each of the twelve districts of the nation. The selection is random and those selected as “tributes” are expected to fight each other until only one of them is left standing. Katniss, the heroine, volunteers for the games once her sister is chosen to take part in the games. She takes part in the games so as to save her sister from taking part in the deadly games.
Things get complicated once her friend Peeta is also chosen as a tribute. She therefore has not only to fight for survival, but also deal with her feelings for Peeta. Throughout the movie, she fights against better trained and prepared tributes and is thus forced to heavily rely on her natural instincts for survival. With the help of Haymitch Abernathy, a former victor, she hopes to stay alive to the end. The choices she has to make are difficult and throughout the movie there is nothing predictable. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie promises to be a compact set of action and passion.
Although previously slated to be a low budget film, the budget was increased given the unexpected warming up that fans have given it. The film is based on the novel by Suzanne Collins and given the following that the book enjoys, if the 23.5 million copies in print is anything to go by, the movie promises to be a huge success. This is a must watch.
