The movie is set in the not-too-distance later life when North America has collapsed for a while due to famine, fires, war and drought. The country is to be divided into the main Capitol and several districts where for every year, two young people representing each district are chosen through a lottery to take part in what has been dubbed The Hunger Games. This was decided as part of the surrender terms when the districts waged war against the Capitol but were badly defeated. Each district then agreed to send two reps, a girl and boy, to participate in the televised games.
The game involves some entertainment and brutal intimidation of some of the districts, which are then broadcast throughout the country Panem. In the game, the participants are required to eliminate their competitors literally by force as all the country’s citizen watch. The boy and girl from the twelve districts have to fight to the death openly on live television.
This is why when Katniss’ sister is chosen through the lottery, Katniss convinces her sibling to let her take the chance and her place alongside her male partner Peeta. Katniss is a 16-year-old girl who lives in a poor part of Panem, which used to be the United States a long time ago, with her younger sister and mother. They are placed against stronger and bigger opponents who have had to train their whole lives in anticipation of being picked for the games. Everything including the audience and rules may change but what stays constant is the fact: kill or be killed
This action, drama, sci-fi, thriller movie will be released on 23 March 2012 and features Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne and Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket. It is directed by Gary Ross and written by Gary Ross.
